String Art

Hi crafty friends, happy March!
I have been seeing string art all around the crafting world and most recently I have seen it make its way in to scrapbooking.  I love the look of string art and wanted to give it a try on a layout.  I finally found the perfect paper to use!  The constellation paper from Crate Paper Kiss Kiss collection was my inspirational background.  I took a picture of one of my little guys sleeping as the focal point.
To create the string art I first used my Silhouette to cut out the word LOVE in large block letters.  I used a paper piercer to create holes along the letters.  First I did a back stitch all around the letters to create the outline.  Now for the fun part!  Using the holes I made for the outline I criss crossed the string on the inside of all the letters.  I love the final result!  I have to be honest...this took forever, but I think that in the end it was worth it.

Thanks for stopping by!

Hey everyone it's Cathy M here and I just loved Candaces string art post.  String art is really hot right now and I love it.  It's such a simple and fun art project and I can't wait to make a piece for my wall, but in the meantime I made some string art for a layout!  For this layout I used DMC floss since it was cheap and I could use several different colours.  It is a little thicker than normal string but I didn't mind that.  I cut out the LOVE from the brown paper, then I cut 4 background squares and wrapped a different colour string around each.  I made sure I secured the string to the squares.  Then I just used a heap of foam squares to add dimension and keep the large brown paper a little above my squares!  It wasn't very hard to do this and it was pretty easy to execute once I figured out how to do it!

I really loved the idea of doing string art for years and so was inspired to try this on a page... found some letters which I traced onto some white cardstock and then stitched round before doing the weave.  It's a great and effective technique.

Scrap Your Scraps Design Team Members Blog Hop... Inspired By

Hello Everyone

Today some of the design team members and I wanted to share a layout on something or someone that has inspired or influenced us or been a part of our lives since our childhood/ teenage years.

I don't think that we as scrapbookers tell our own stories as much as we would like to sometimes so this was a way for me to do that on a personal level.

As I was doing my daily walk one morning (this is where a lot of my thinking happens! ;)) and listening to U2's thirteenth studio album "Age Of Innocence" I was taken back to my early teenage years and when I started listening and loving U2 in 1983.  The songs are very reminiscent of their early work and I started to think about the fact that they (their music and humanitarism) have been a part of my life for over 30 years!  Their music has always 'spoken' to me and through them I became aware of groups like Amnesty International.  Their music is something that I have always connected with.  I wanted to document this (my love for U2) in a layout.  So this was the story behind how our Scrap Your Scrap blog post came to life.

My music teacher in high school was Victor Tallarico, the father of Aerosmith's Steven Tyler.  Mr. Tallarico taught us not only music theory, but also music appreciation.  I could listen to him play the piano all day.  From him I learned that music comes in all forms and styles, and there is more to music than pop.  He taught me to broaden my horizons and take it all in.  This concept has impacted my entire life, and I am more open-minded because of it - and because of him.  I wish I'd had a chance to tell him this in person, but he passed away some years ago.  This layout is a tribute to him, and I'd like to think that somehow he knows just what he meant to me.  Thanks, Mr. T!

There are a very few things that I still have that I received as a child.  I guess it makes sense that one of the things that I do have would be something very special to me.  In my religion we get baptized at the age of 8 years old.  When I was baptized my mom and dad bought me my very own set of scriptures with my name engraved on them.  On the front inside cover they wrote their testimony and their hopes and dreams for my life.  As I have grown, gotten married and had children of my own I have always gone back and read what my parents wrote.  I feel so blessed to have such amazing parents that have taught me about God and service and being a little better everyday.  I hope to continue this tradition with all my children.

My Husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary last September.  Our Daughter was playing Soccer in Hawaii and we turned the trip into a better late than never Honeymoon.  My Husband is my person and  "My Love"

Here is my blog hop entry for Scrap Your Scraps!  For our theme I decided to focus on my first love, art.  I have, in one way or another done art my entire life.  The last year though has been tough, and I had pretty much given up doing any illustrating or drawing, but I decided to make this page so that I could look at it and be inspired again.  It was a way for me to remember what I have done and to hopefully motivate me to keep going!

My layout documents my walk with God.  I committed my life when I was 6 and have been very blessed to know and feel God's hand on my life through good and tough times.  I wouldn't be who I am today if it wasn't for God.  I am truly blessed.

Sneak Peak of Scrap Your Scraps Design Team Group Post coming February 16th!

Hello Everyone

Today we are sharing a sneak peak of a group post for February 16th (next Monday).  The idea was to create a layout about someone or something that has influenced us or been a part of our lives since our childhood/teenage years.
We as scrapbookers sometimes don't get to work on our own stories as much as we'd like to (or maybe don't at all).  This was a way to do a page that speaks a little about who we are so that when future generations look through all the beautiful albums we have created will learn a thing or two about the individual who put a lot of love, time and energy into creating those albums!

Thanks for stopping by today and remember to come back on the 16th for the reveal of all these fabulous layouts! Hope this will inspire you to starting thinking about creating your own layouts about yourselves!

Let's Get Digital!-Using Digital Cut files on Layouts

Hi scrappers!  Welome back to Scrap your Scraps.  Today I am sharing some ideas on using digital cut files on your layouts.  One of my favorite tools in my craft room is my silhouette cameo.  A silhouette cameo is so versatile and lets you create everything from your own backgrounds and titles to detailed embellishments.
Here are some layouts I created with some digital cut files that I bought from The Cut Shoppe.

On the first layout I took the big circle and added little scraps of paper to the back of it.  When I was done adding paper to the back I cut the large circle in to 3 pieces.  To add dimension I popped up the cut file with foam squares.  The finishing touches were made with stickers, wood veneers, and a little gold stitching.

For the second layout I added some patterned paper behind the cut file then vellum and photos on top.  I used gold trimmed labels to add the names and ages of all my cuties by their pictures.  The finishing touches were added with a little bit of gold stitching and a big gold title.

Now it is your turn!  Dust off that die cut machine, bring out all your paper scraps and get to work.  For more ideas you can head to my blog here.  As usual if you have any questions let me know!  Have a great day!

Hi everyone, it's Cat here with a contribution to this wonderful post by Candace!  So I don't have a Silhouette machine, but I do have an old Cricut machine.  It's the 6x12 one so I can only do so much with it, but I decided to dust it off and see if I could make something fun with it.  I decided to just pick a cut out and fill a half page with it that I could then back with paper.  I ended making the deer one that I used for this layout, and a bunny one that I'm going to use on another layout.  I absolutely love how it turned out and I got to use up more scraps!  Everything except the very background paper that I used was a scrap from my stash!

Starting the New Year with new prompts! Jan 5th-2015

Hey everyone, it's Cathy Martin here.  Long time no scrap eh?  It's 2015 and it's time to wake up from our holiday comas and get back into scrapping!  I know some of you haven't stopped, but between working full-time, the holidays, and my sons birthday I get pretty busy this time of year.  Now that the hustle and bustle are over it's time for me to get back into the swing of things, and that means scrapping, and lots of it!  This month I'm back with another 5 prompts to help jump start some creativity and give you some challenges to think about when starting your pages.

Prompt #1 - Scraplift a favorite scrapper

I personally don't see a thing wrong with scraplifting from another project, and I definitely have my favorite scrappers in this industry, so why not take advantage of it and scraplift one of your favorite scrappers.  There is probably a reason they are one of your favorites so this is a great time to go through your Pinterest board, or check out some blogs and get some inspiration.  For my inspiration I chose Jill Sprott.  I started watching her videos back on Two Peas in a Bucket and have loved her work ever since, not to mention her down to earth personality.

Prompt #2 - Use at least 10 patterned papers

Yep you read that right, at least 10, more if you want to get really adventurous!  The trick with using different patterned papers is to use them in small doses, and don't forget, using patterned vellum can add depth without weighing down a layout!  Don't forget, you don't have to use paper from just one collection, but if you are new to this whole thing that would be a good place to start.  I prefer to mix and match my papers, using old stash and scraps as well as new papers from my recent kits.

Prompt #3 - Tuck it away

Embellishments that is.  Why not try tucking your embellishment clusters under your layers.  This will create interest and depth to your layout and it can help ground your cluster so it doesn't look like it's just floating around!

Prompt #4 - Scrap a page without a story

I know this is exactly the opposite of what scrapbooking is all about, telling your, or your family's story, but sometimes don't you just have a photo that's cute with pretty much no story behind it?  I do a lot of "everyday" scrapbooking so I end up with a lot of these kinds of photos and I just can't help but want to give them their spotlight, so I have decided to scrap everything from events to the little everyday candid moments.

Prompt #5 - Use journaling strips

Seems pretty simple I know, but this is a fun alternative to a journaling block, or a tag, etc.  I used to do this method a lot back when I would print out my journaling, but now that I hand write most of the time I forget that you can still do it.  If you have a typewriter (so jealous btw)  this method also works out great!

So get out there and get scrapping, use all 5 prompts together or maybe just take one, but whatever you do have fun and don't forget to love what you're doing!  Here is my finished layout using all 5 prompts for January!

Hello Everyone!
I was so inspired by Cat's layout and prompts for this month!  I used more than 10 patterned papers, tucked in a couple of embellishments, did my journaling in strips and these photos are ones my husband came across while cleaning out his office over the holidays!  These photos are from 11 years ago almost to the day!  The only prompt I didn't really use was to scrap lift a favourite scrapper...instead I used a favourite style of layout for me which is a grid layout!

All my products are from Dear Lizzy Day Dreamer and Lucky Charm collections.  The gold chip board hearts are from Studio Calico.

Thanks for stopping by and HAPPY SCRAPPIN'!
